Tragedy Turned Political Ally

Steven Muffson and Michael D Shear via The Washington Post:
Allies of the president have argued for weeks that the administration should stop talking about BP, the oil company responsible for the spill, and instead tap into the public attention to the catastrophe in hopes of giving it at least some redemptive value in the long term.
I’m disheartened to think that Señor Esperanza y Cambio would actively use the oil spill to advance his prohibitively expensive and largely ineffective cap and trade political agenda due to the evils of oil, especially after he told us a few weeks ago that it was in America’s interest to accelerate oil drilling off of American shores, though perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised in the least. I would never advocate that we shouldn’t move away from the use of fossil fuels sooner rather than later. I’m a firm believer in alternative, clean energy sources and environmental conservation. I’ve played pivotal roles in various environmental projects.1 My own business is centered around the idea of environmental stewardship. But at this point renewable energies are simply too costly to push on to the American people en masse, especially when we are in the midst of continuous financial meltdown. Sustainable energies will emerge as victorious in the long term, but it will have to be done via the marketplace in order to be financially sustainable and take hold as not only an alternative, but as a replacement for fossil fuels.
