Apparently the Amish Aren’t Environmentally Sound

F.U.C.K. The federal government.  Of all of the people on earth who deserve to be left alone by government, it’s the goddamn Amish.  Sindya N. Bhanoo of The New York Times:

But farmers like Mr. Stoltzfus are facing growing scrutiny for agricultural practices that the federal government sees as environmentally destructive. Their cows generate heaps of manure that easily washes into streams and flows onward into the Chesapeake Bay.

And the Environmental Protection Agency, charged by President Obama with restoring the bay to health, is determined to crack down. The farmers have a choice: change the way they farm or face stiff penalties.

The Amish communities nationwide are a sound model for American self governance the way the founders envisioned.  I don’t envy their way of life, but I do respect that they have lived in insulated, self-governed communities for generations, have asked for nothing except to be left alone to farm their land in peace, and they have thrived.  They live simply, work hard, take an extreme amount of pride in their work, don’t bother anyone, and are likely the most environmentally sound group of people in America.  If there is only one thing that our government can do for them, it would be to shut the fuck up about the Amish having the livestock with which they farm shit on their own land.
