Both “L” and “l” libertarians have been saying this for years:

Having pushed back against the conventional wisdom on the Tea Party costing Republicans, I will say this: conservatives ought to seek out higher quality candidates as their standard-bearers. If Joe Miller comes up short in Alaska, he won’t have lost because he was too conservative. He will have lost because of his own defects as a candidate.

As Antle, III writes, principle must come before political savvy, but it would be fucking nice to actually have candidates that at least look the part so that the media doesn’t have something about which to harp from the get-go. It’s one thing to have sound political values, but another to actually win an election.
