Unemployment Benefits = Laziness

Sara Murray via The Wall Street Journal concerning people on the dole turning down good job offers:
Management Recruiters of Sacramento, Calif., says it recently had a tough time filling six engineering positions at an Oregon manufacturer paying $60,000 a year—and suspects long-term jobless benefits were part of the hitch.

Some candidates suggested he call them back when their benefits were scheduled to run out, he says.
I can’t think of a better reason to block all further efforts to extend unemployment benefits. We need to give people a reason to get up off their asses and get a fucking job. If one can turn down $60k, then they don’t need my fucking money either. If we are going to insist on unemployment benefits, we should add a stipulation that requires potential employers to report those who have turned down job opportunities so that we can kick their asses out of the goddamn welfare line. If you’re too good for a job, you’re too good for the dole.

I remember a time when being on welfare was considered a bad thing. Back when there was a stigma of shame on those who lived off the government. Now, it seems if you’re NOT a mooch, you’re rube. I blame Ol’ Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan, and MTV for showing the mainstream that being on Welfare is “cool.”
