The Threat from Terrorism is Mostly an American Fantasy

The Economist in a piece gauging the “actual” threat to America and Americans via a terrorist attack:
Maybe we should take [the utter lack of terrorist plots in which competent Muslim terrorists have attacked America since 9/11] as evidence that “the surge” somehow succeeded in keeping America’s crowded places unexploded. But it’s far more sensible to take this happy fact as evidence of the further happy fact that the supply of people ready, willing, and able to blow up America’s crowded places is very small.
If “they” hate us for our freedom, it would seem that there would be a far more concerted effort to attack us. Simply put there is no evidence that justifies our level of fear and our level of “security” in the name of defending Americans against terrorism. No legitimate bomb attempts have worked due to utter incompetence. It would seem that the same organizations that have given the full US military fits for nearly a decade would be able to do better than a failed shoe or underwear bomb and a horribly incompetent car bomb. Furthermore, there is no evidence that any of those attempts were in any way funded or aided by [em]actual[/em] Muslim terror groups. These plots have been aided (and in some cases entirely instigated) by American federal agencies.
