Apologizing for Freedom
Sunday 3 April 2011 - Filed under Constitution + Dumbassery
Though I don’t at all condone the idiocy that is the burning of a Koran by Florida lunatic pastor Terry Jones, I will absolutely defend his right to have done it. Freedom of Speech is a cornerstone of not only democracy, but of our republic. It’s the first fucking right mentioned in the Bill of Rights, and is essential to maintaining freedom. So why the fuck are we apologizing to a bunch of fucktards for our own freedoms and those who care to exercise them? The New York Times:
On Sunday, the continuing violence prompted the top American commander, Gen. David H. Petraeus, and the NATO civilian representative in Afghanistan, Mark Sedwill, to issue a joint statement condemning the Koran burnings.
“In view of the events of recent days, we feel it is important on behalf of ISAF and NATO members in Afghanistan to reiterate our condemnation of any disrespect to the Holy Qur’an and the Muslim faith,” the statement said. “We condemn, in particular, the action of an individual in the United States who recently burned the Holy Qur’an,” referring to Terry Jones, an evangelical pastor in Gainesville, Fla.
The answer is not to condemn our own freedoms (you know, the same ones we’re trying to instill in the Afghan populace with our nation building clusterfuck), no matter how poorly exercised, but to get the fuck out of that shithole.
