Trying to figure out why there’s a shortage is a big challenge. Different experts – even different federal agencies – give you very different reasons.

DEA is involved because these medications are classified as potential drugs-of-abuse, and thus are controlled substances. The DEA sets an annual ceiling on how much of these drugs can be made.

So the DEA sets a limit on the drugs, and people at NPR wonder why there’s a shortage? I wonder if the DEA sets a limit on drugs designed to help with stupid.

With the DEA trying to restrict the dissemination of narcotic pain killers, any bets how long until there’s a huge mystery as to why patients who suffer from extreme pain are having a hard time finding pain medications?
