The Memo

Apparently Obama didn’t get the memo which states that the entire point of the American experiment and the entire reasoning behind writing a constitution which outlines a government with limited powers and various checks and balances was a reaction to one man rule. Making law is intentionally a process which goes through various stages, not because the founders were fools, but because it’s more difficult to trounce on the rights of individuals if making law is hard.
For Obama, that meeting was a turning point. As a senator and presidential candidate, he had criticized George W. Bush for flouting the role of Congress. And during his first two years in the White House — when Democrats controlled Congress — Obama largely worked through the legislative process to achieve his domestic policy goals.
But increasingly in recent months, the Obama administration has been seeking ways to act without Congress. Branding its unilateral efforts “We Can’t Wait,” a slogan aides said Obama coined at that strategy meeting, the White House has rolled out dozens of new policies — on jobs for veterans, preventing drug shortages, raising fuel economy standards, curbing domestic violence and more — and bypassed the Senate confirmation process to install officials using his recess appointment powers.
Each time, Obama has touted the fact that he is bypassing lawmakers.
It appears that Obama’s mantra is now “Whenever the constitutional process is inconvenient, fuck it, we’ll do what I want anyways.”
