Even a Blind Squirrel

Cut SpendingIt’s not often that the Times prints something worth reading, but I’ll take what I can get. Though there are some deep flaws in Leonhardt’s argument, like the idea that tax hikes should be on the table initially,1 and that government is the best – perhaps only – provider of advanced hospitals, education, etc, the premise of the article is right on. We cannot keep going on the same fiscal track. We must get our debt under control lest we find ourselves in Greece’s unenviable position. What is most encouraging, however, is that one of the more terminally demotarded publications in the US has finally come to the conclusion that the spending binge must come to an end, the welfare state needs to be diminished, and that we will have to suffer some economic hardships before we can achieve some semblance of financial sanity. Perhaps it’s just lip service (read: I’m almost positive it’s lip service intended to fellate Obama while his team of “Republicans and Democrats, working together” analyze “everything on the table” and come up with the Demotard’s version of fixing the problem), but at least the idea that government has engaged in an orgy of spending over the last decade isn’t only coming from one side anymore.

1. Though I imagine that some taxes will need to be raised in some areas in order to reach financial stability as a nation, in my estimation that’s step 836. Steps 1-835 all involve cutting spending in virtually every area of government.  Before we cut spending, raising taxes is just emptying the ocean with a spoon.
