NTSA: Abortion Edition

Friday 28 May 2010 - Filed under Dumbassery + Rand Paul

Not This Shit AgainThough it seems that bloggers have stopped shitting themselves en masse over Rand Paul’s supposed racism, Reason’s Hit-n-Run blog, generally very good (and home of the absolute best blog commenters I have encountered) has moved on to yet another topic which was effectively settled nearly 4 decades ago: Rand Paul’s position on abortion.  I had planned to write a piece detailing his stance on abortion to show why it may not have the support of many libertarians, but Reason does a fine job (certainly more involved than I would have written), there is no consensus amongst those in the libertarian party concerning abortion, and I had already come to the conclusion that although a candidate’s view concerning abortion is generally viewed as a cornerstone of their political platform, all of it is grandstanding because of one itsy-bitsy reason: THERE ISN’T A FUCKING THING THAT ANY POLITICIAN CAN DO ABOUT ABORTION.

It’s a non-issue.  It’s political banner flying, letting a particular portion of the voting public (likely those who would have voted for you anyways based purely on the color of your jersey) that “I’m okay.”  And all it does is distract voters from hearing about the things that actually matter.  I don’t really give a shit what Rand Paul, or any other politician for that matter, thinks about abortion.  I want to know what he thinks about Iraq and Afghanistan, or the war on drugs,1 or how the fuck we can get congress to stop running up the credit card bills, or how he might deal with “X” oil company if another massive spill like the current one in the gulf were to happen again, or how we might somehow mitigte the disaster that is ObamaCare before it starts draining us dry, or any number of things that actually affect modern-day America, not the hot topics in America during the early 19fucking70s.

I understand that many, particularly libertarians, are interested to see just how libertarian Paul is, and it does seem that his stance on abortion is not only very conservative, but even more conservative than your average conservatard.  But his stance on abortion is not going to help with today’s policy issues.  As far as I’m concerned, he can be a goddamn abortion nazi so long as he has real ideas on how to clean up the mess in DC and help set America back on a healthy path.  And if those ideas are even libertarian-leaning, he’s good by me, regardless of what he thinks about abortion.

_______________
1. Perhaps especially, the war on drugs, as he doesn’t have any sort of tangible public record of his stance on it.
